Position Title: Intern/Nutrition Focus

Description:
The Intern with a Nutrition Focus is instrumental in the adaptation of HER Guidelines within the
Fredericksburg Regional Food Bank (FRFB), including but not limited to the supervision and
coordination of volunteers, coding and classifying pantry items, implementation and
coordination of intake assessment and check out process. The Intern will help assess our
community through survey applications both one on one and in focus group settings. This
position is expected to provide superb customer service and adhere to safety, quality and food
safety standards set by FRFB.
Responsibilities:
● Gain familiarization with neighbor surveys’ key insights to capture our community’s key cultures
and food relevance based on culture and preferences
● Aid in the launch of comprehensive qualitative neighbor assessments to enhance program
standards within the community
● Aid in administering and documenting surveys in both one on one and focus group environments
● Identify community nutrition education resources to launch supportive educational
opportunities for our neighbors
● Aid in the development of nutrition education schedule
● Gain familiarization with HER Nutrition Guidelines and SWAP (Supporting Wellness at Pantries)
● With the Sortation Room Associate, train volunteers on operation processes that include
nutrition rankings and answer questions related to nutrition guidelines
● Participate in volunteer engagement activities including surveys
● Compile data and information on inventory and utilize tracking system to maintain accurate
records in coordination with SWAP using HER Guidelines
● Utilize SWAP for the purpose of selecting product for programs such as Order Ahead
● Attend webinar and training sessions pertaining to equity and inclusion, HER Guidelines, and
other topics as available
● Prioritize tasks and projects with multiple deadlines
● Assess information from a variety of sources and make independent decisions based on that
information.
● Manage conflicts, questions and neighbor/volunteer interaction in a courteous, professional and
friendly manner
● Demonstrate effective communication techniques and foster an environment of open dialogue
● Comply with all regulations requiring neighbor confidentiality
● Utilize multiple mediums for communicating policies, changes, and best practices to neighbors
● Solicit feedback from neighbors and volunteers to aid in decision making about future programs
and changes
● Display passion and optimism for the work, provide vision and inspiration to peers, and
exemplify FRFB core values
●Participate in group decision making by contributing insight and ideas to direct
supervisor and program team
Qualifications:
General
● Honesty, integrity, and commitment to fighting hunger in the Fredericksburg Region
● Ability to relate effectively with other staff, volunteers, community partners, and the general
public.
● Must have a clear understanding of and ability to articulate the mission of the FRFB.
● Ability to complete work in an accurate, useful, and timely manner.
● Valid VA Driver’s License
Specific to Position
● Minimum of six (6) months of directly related experience or coursework equivalent
● Capability to read, write, and speak multiple languages preferred
● May be required to work outside of general operating hours
